Despite the island’s very small size, hospitals in Malta have very good reputations. The island offers excellent medical care, both general and specialized. In the event of a medical emergency or need for specific treatments, many public or private health facilities will be able to treat you.
Public hospitals in Malta
If you are an EU national either on holiday in Malta or working on the island, you can access healthcare at public hospitals free of charge. Do not forget to bring your European health insurance card or your Maltese social security number. You will also need to bring your latest payslip.
Mater Dei, Msida
This public hospital opened in 2007 and is the largest hospital in Malta. It is equipped for most surgical procedures and deals with emergencies as well as specific consultations. It is a university hospital, which trains students in medicine and various types of care, including international students who are doing an internship in the medical profession.

This hospital is specialized in cancer diseases, skin diseases and palliative care. It recently moved its various departments to other hospitals, only keeping the dermatological department.

Karin Grech Hospital, Msida
It is a rehabilitation and convalescence hospital, dealing more with specific care. It is part of the former Saint Luke General Hospital, which is now closed.
Types of care
Rehabilitation for people with cognitive or physical impairment after cardiac arrest, stroke, brain injury or other serious accident.
This hospital provides day care for people aged 60 and over, referred by their GP or by a clinic in Malta, for example.

Gozo General Hospital, Victoria
It is the largest hospital in the archipelago of Malta, with 270 beds, and the only hospital in Gozo.
It is the equivalent of Mater Dei, and offers all types of general care, emergency or consultation, and also handles most surgeries.

It is a psychiatric hospital, located in Attard. It welcomes permanent patients, in rehabilitation and/or convalescence. It also has a department dedicated to the elderly suffering from degenerative diseases.

Private hospitals and clinics in Malta
If you want more specific care and to avoid waiting times as much as possible, several private hospitals and clinics are also available. Make sure to have private insurance to cover your expenses, as consultations and/or surgeries carried out in these establishments will not be covered by social security.
St. James Hospital, Sliema and Zabbar
These are the most well-known private hospitals in Malta. They are part of an international group with establishments also in Hungary and Libya. They are very modern hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment.
Zabbar Hospital also has a maternity ward.
A clinic specializing in ophthalmology has also opened in Birkirkara: The Saint James Eye Clinic. It offers excellent services, using the latest medical technologies.

Consultation centres in Malta
For general and non-emergency medical consultations, the centres are located in the main towns and in the centre of the island. They are called Health Centres. You can go there without an appointment.
Care and consultation are reimbursed by Maltese Social Security, but you must go to the clinic assigned to you according to your town of residence. Remember to bring your ID and social security number with you.
