Ferries in Malta

Ferries in Malta are very useful. They allow you to reach the island of Gozo, and also to get to Valletta from Sliema without taking the bus. You can also catch a ferry reach the 3 cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua) from Valletta. It allows for quick travel to these destinations while enjoying a very pleasant time crossing the water.

Malta – Gozo

The quickest way to get to Gozo is to take the ferry from the Cirkewwa terminal in the north of the island. The journey takes about 25 minutes and ferries depart every 30 to 45 minutes, in both directions.

Ferries are operational 24/7 and you can board them as foot passengers or with your vehicle. Different rates apply depending on your means of transport.

Procedures

• Tickets are only sold at the Mgarr-Gozo terminal desk on a round-trip basis. Passengers boarding the ferry at Cirkewwa in Malta do not need to have a ticket, as it is payable upon their return to Malta from Gozo.
• You can also purchase pre-paid tickets at any time in Mgarr during office hours.
• Each passenger (vehicle and pedestrian) must be in possession of a valid ticket before boarding the ship in Gozo.

Rates

Different rates apply depending on your age and means of transport. Payment for the trip is made upon your return to Malta, or upon departure if you are traveling from Gozo to Malta.

  • Pedestrian: €1.15 for children aged 3 to 12 // €4.65 per return trip // €4.05 for night trips during the winter period (consult the website for the exact dates of the winter period, from November to March).
  • Vehicle: €15.70 for the vehicle plus the driver // €12.80 for night trips (Leaving Mgarr after 08:00 p.m. and before the first trip in the morning (consult the website for the exact dates of the winter period from November to March)
  • 2-wheels: €8.15 for the vehicle, the driver, and passenger // €6.95 for night trips between 01:30 a.m. and 04:30 a.m. during the winter period (Consult the website for the exact dates of the winter period from November to March).
  • Bike: €1.15 for any bike plus the price of a standard ticket for the rider.
  • Trailers: €13.95 for any trailer not exceeding 5 meters in length.
  • Commercial vehicles: From €27.90 to €93.14, depending on the length of the vehicle.

  • Cards for multiple trips can also be purchased in advance, from 5 to 52 trips for pedestrian and vehicle passengers (price and validity period depending on the number of trips).

Sliema –Valletta – Sliema

To reach Sliema from Valletta or vice-versa, you have the option of taking the ferry, rather than the bus. In addition to enjoying the water crossing with a view of the fortifications of Valletta and Manoel Island, you will also save considerable time during peak hours on the roads.

The ferry also connects Valletta with the 3 cities. The 3 cities are 3 towns across the water from Valletta; 3 fortified cities that represent the maritime history of Malta, and present a glimpse into the past, with their churches, bastions, and palaces.
