Malta has had a long history of LGBT rights. From the de-criminalization of homosexuality in 1973 to the authorization of same-sex civil unions in 2017, taboos have fallen away, and Malta has become one of the countries where LGBT rights are most respected. It is now easy to find LGBT events, associations, or outings.

Michelangelo Cafe Lounge – Valletta
Michelangelo replaced the bar formerly known as Monaliza. Located on the Valletta seafront, it offers breath-taking views of Sliema. Thanks to its large terrace, you can enjoy a good cocktail or a platter of cold meats and cheese. As a rather quiet bar, it is perfect for a “date night” in the beautiful capital of Malta.

The Birdcage Lounge
This bar is located in Rabat, not far from Mdina. This is an underground bar where the goal is simply to have fun with friends, dance and taste their delicious cocktails. The atmosphere is fantastic, and all ages are welcome there for a good time.

Michelangelo Club
The Michelangelo Club, located on the main street of Paceville (not far from the Network Bar), will allow you to end the night, meet people or simply meet your friends. There are many events (drag shows, strip shows) on weekends and holidays. Also note that the club is open all week in winter and summer. You can get a membership card by asking for it at the bar or pay 5 euros for admission with two free drinks.

Lollipop parties
Lollipop evenings are themed evenings organized once a month, most often in Tigulio (St Julian’s), but sometimes also in other clubs. They also put on a big party during the Gaypride. The atmosphere of the Lollipop Parties is very festive, and the idea is to come dressed the way you feel most comfortable. Acceptance and tolerance are the main rules of these evenings.

The Gay boat parties
As its name suggests, these boat parties are exclusively Gay and give you the opportunity to meet people on a boat departing from Sliema in the evening with a stop on the paradise island of Comino. You will usually return before midnight to continue your night in other bars.
The Malta Pride
Unlike many cities in Europe, the Pride does not take place in June-July but in September. All LGBT bars, clubs and associations come together in Valletta for a colourful walk of pride. A lot of companies also join the march to show that everyone has the same rights and to support the movement. A huge LGBT Flag is unrolled all along the main street and pride floats will pass by before and after. Parties organized by bars or Lollipop will then continue until the end of the night.

LGBT associations
The main association is Allied Rainbow Communities, which advocates for LGBT rights in Malta. This association organizes many activities throughout the year (meetings, BBQ, hiking). It allows the community to meet, discuss and, most importantly, to share.
As Malta is one of the safest countries in the EU, it is very easy to meet and join colourful evenings. If going out is not what turns you on the most, you can always find other activities and have a good time.
